We have added new membership options to our cooperative.
There is a lot of hype in the media about a hand full of Billionaires trying their hand at space mining. Planetary Resources is perhaps the best funded attempt at extracting minerals from asteroids but it is certainly not the first. The idea of space mining dates back to the early science fiction writers. There are many groups that have expressed interest and desire to mine the riches of our solar system, ourselves included.
Planetary Resources plans a multi step approach over the next 10 years or so to eventual mineral extraction. Our plan could have us mining in as little as 5 years once the funding is in place. The obvious markets that most groups are targeting are most importantly, Water then precious metals (platinum group and REE). Our primary interest is for iron, the foundation of construction. At this stage it is still not known if high value minerals can be returned to Earth economically with sufficient profit margins. Our venture is primarily targeting the future of space development by providing a quality and quantity mineral resource in outer space. The obvious benefits of returning minerals to Earth, if it proves viable, will become a secondary interest to us and a primary means of return on investment for our backers. Okay, I have to post here because too many people out there are clueless about Humanity and its rights. I see tweets and comments about humans and specifically companies or individuals not having the right to claims in outer space. There is also an attempt by "world authorities" to regulate/prevent this.
The LAW is simple: You spend the money/effort to explore new lands, it is yours. This has been the law since the very first human left his/her cave and walked to "new lands". What right do Terran governments have to impose law on extra Terran resources? Those that chose to venture into outer space will formulate their own laws that satisfy the requirements of the circumstances. Terran Law can only apply limits to affecting life on Earth. Some people claim that we don't have the right as a species to explore/develop outer space. Well, guess what! The Earth is a part of our universe the same way a given acre or mineral resource, on Earth, is a part of Earth. What difference does it make that it is not within our atmosphere? If we can buy/appropriate land and resources on Earth than we can do the same to any part of this universe we are able to get to. This was tweeted by Gretchen Humphrey @justmegretchen
The people that built the first space craft had never flown in outer space...you are not limited by your experience! #dreambig Hi,
I was referred to you by Andrew D. Nystrom. While I am a firm believer in the fact that humans seem to have difficulty seeing past 5PM, I am occasionally impressed by the few. I find your clock idea a step towards 5:30PM. An extra '0' so humanity can continue for another 98,000 years is reassuring. This short sightedness is echoed throughout the vaults of time by many cultures like the Mayans and Microsoft (hmmmm, I wonder if it is the letter 'M' that is the issue here). I believe that Mr. Nystrom thought that my project conformed to your thinking ... past the here and now. I am building a space habitat so that humanity can be diverse and our legacy can continue beyond the limits of Earth and beyond the next 100,000 years. Future thinking is not a function of time but rather an exercise in the growth and deployment of knowledge. Our project is slated to take about 25years to complete, but that goal is not the premiss of the task. Our objective is a growth of understanding that we are stagnant and unwilling to utilize our potential ... oh yeah, and we are building a habitat to house 2million people in outer space. We walked on the moon in the 60's and our fundamental knowledge by the late 70's was sufficient then to put mankind in permanent residence in outer space. Instead we procrastinate and divert economic efforts to tiny foot steps out of our cave. Too much of our thinking is that of the philosophy of the pharmaceutical industry "treat the symptom, there is no future in solving the problem". Not 'Long Now', humanity will have exceeded its fragile eco-bubble and will guarantee its longevity by expanding to self created habitats and shortly thereafter occupy other worlds. Food for knowledge! -- Louis C Gelinas Founder Space Development Cooperative http://www.spacedevcoop.com/ Okay, due to some pestering, the blog is back. I am not a fan of blogs or forums but I have succumb to the requests of the "few". I even started a Facebook account last week after swearing I would never do so. "..The times they are a change'n" to quote some of my favorite music, which leads me to an interesting debate I bad the other day:
Lenard Cohen or Bob Dylan, who is the best lyricist? Hmmm I think I will tweet that. We are about 1 week away from completing our first month. We will have someone 'tweeting' for us soon. The site is getting moderate hits.
Hmmmm, There has been some questioning of our ability to fulfill our claim with the sale of a home so cheap! People are saying that "if it costs say $70,000 to build a home on earth then you can't possibly expect to build one for $25,000 or even $75,000 in outer space".
How much does it cost to build a house in rural Brazil compared to New York? No human hand will go into the construction of your homes structure. No purchased material will be used in the construction of your home. So how much will it cost us to build your home? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Well, here we are on day 7, and getting good numbers of visitors. We have 6 persons interested in signing up, but little chatter on forums (that's ok, I'm not a huge fan of forums myself). People are NOT doing the survey either, How are we supposed to compile useless number?
Yup, only 12 hours before the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gararin's first flight to outer space here we are getting ready to take the next huge leap into space.
